Into the Sun

When I first looked into Donna’s eyes, all those years ago, it was like looking into the sun.

A flash of such brilliance momentarily blotted my vision.

Even as I regained my sight all the visual purple had been bleached from my eyes causing everything in my field of vision to have a soft coral halo.

Donna had a shimmer around her.

I was so astonished. I could not believe my eyes.

I have seen auras around a few people in my life. But those were mere glows.

There must have been some sort of look on my face – because she just gave a soft smile, turning her head slightly with an almost-shy, side-long glance before gazing off across the room.

She turned abruptly to me, smiling and saying: “It will happen. . . From time to time”.

“Most people say nothing. I can see that they want to. And I say nothing. For I have nothing to say.”

So I said nothing. Ever. To Donna, or to anyone about these moments.

Over the years, the flashes happened every now and then.

Usually when Donna was very excited or very sad.

However, in our last year, the flashes were occurring more and more often. As her moods became more intense.

On our last night together – After we kissed, Donna was shimmering as she got out of the Wolf.

And I knew I would never see her alive in this world again.

Yet – I felt no sadness, nor sorrow. Just a hollow yearning for something that I knew then, would last me for the rest of my days.

And will continue until we meet again.

I sit here drinking my scotch, watch that boat take my love far away, where flamingoes fly.

She said she’d wait for me. A thousand years away in a place where flamingoes fly.
